Dual-Fuel Systems: A Heat Pump With Backup Heat

Dual-fuel pairs a heat pump with a propane or electric backup, so you get efficiency most of the season and full heat on the worst nights.

A dual-fuel (hybrid) system runs an efficient heat pump for most of the heating season and automatically switches to a propane or electric backup furnace on the coldest days — giving you low running costs and full heat in extreme cold. For our Zone 5A climate, it's one of the smartest setups available.

What is a dual-fuel system?

It's a heat pump and a backup furnace working as one system, with controls that decide which to use based on outdoor temperature. The heat pump handles the bulk of the season efficiently; the furnace (often propane) takes over below the system's balance point when burning fuel becomes the better choice.

When dual-fuel is the right call

  • You already have propane and a furnace, and want to slash running cost without losing extreme-cold capacity.
  • You're converting from oil or electric resistance and want a safety margin for the worst nights.
  • You want both efficiency and peace of mind — no anxiety about a deep cold snap.
  • You're replacing AC anyway — adding a heat pump instead of a plain air conditioner unlocks dual-fuel for a modest step up. Weigh it in repair vs. replace.

How the switchover works

The system is programmed with a balance point — the outdoor temperature where it hands off from heat pump to furnace. Set it correctly and the changeover is invisible: you stay comfortable while the system always uses the cheaper heat source for the conditions. Set it wrong and you either burn too much propane or strain the heat pump. Getting that setting right is part of a professional install.

Failure modes to avoid

  • A balance point set by guesswork instead of your equipment and fuel prices.
  • An undersized backup that can't carry the coldest nights.
  • Skipping the load calculation — both halves must be sized to the home.
  • Old, leaky ducts that undercut the efficient heat pump.

How we set it up

We size both stages to your home, set the balance point to your equipment and local propane price, and verify the changeover. We're a Daikin Authorized Dealer (and also install and service Ruud), licensed, insured, EPA-certified, family-owned, and rated 5.0 across 10 Google reviews.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a dual-fuel or hybrid heating system?
It's a heat pump paired with a backup furnace (usually propane or electric). The heat pump heats efficiently most of the year, and the furnace automatically takes over on the coldest days, so you get low running costs without losing heat in extreme cold.
Can I add a heat pump to my existing propane furnace?
In many cases, yes — that's exactly what a dual-fuel system is. We assess your existing furnace, ductwork, and electrical, then pair a properly sized heat pump and set the changeover point for your home and propane price.
What is a balance point?
The balance point is the outdoor temperature where the system switches from heat pump to backup furnace. Setting it correctly — based on your equipment and local fuel cost — is what makes a dual-fuel system both comfortable and economical.
