A pond-loop geothermal system sinks coils of pipe into a pond or lake of adequate depth and size, using the water as the heat exchanger — often the lowest-cost loop option for a property that has the right water. If you've got a farm pond, it's worth a serious look.
What is a pond loop?
It's a closed ground loop where the buried-pipe portion is instead coiled and anchored beneath the surface of a pond. The same fluid circulates through the coils, exchanging heat with the water. Because there's no trenching or drilling across a field, a qualifying pond can make the loop the most affordable part of a geothermal system.
When a pond loop fits
- You have a pond of sufficient depth and surface area close enough to the home.
- The pond stays full year-round and doesn't freeze solid to the bottom.
- You want geothermal efficiency without extensive excavation.
The pond has to meet minimum depth and size requirements so the coils stay submerged and have enough water to exchange heat — which is exactly what we check on site.
How it works through our seasons
In winter, the loop pulls heat from the relatively warm deep water; in summer, it rejects heat into it. Deep water holds a steady temperature, which is why pond loops perform well even through our Zone 5A extremes — the same principle that makes geothermal beat air-source on the coldest nights.
Failure modes to avoid
- A pond that's too shallow or too small — the loop must stay submerged with enough water volume.
- Poor placement that risks the loop or the pond's use.
- Undersizing the loop or system for the home's actual load.
- Ignoring the home's insulation.
How we evaluate your pond
We assess the pond's depth, size, and distance to the home, confirm it can host a properly sized loop, and design the system around your home's heat loss. We're licensed, insured, EPA-certified, family-owned, and rated 5.0 across 10 Google reviews — and we'll tell you honestly if your pond doesn't qualify.
