We don't post a single price for air conditioning replacement, because the real number depends on your home — its size, the efficiency you choose, the condition of your ductwork, and how complex the install is. Here's what actually drives the cost, and how to get a real figure without the guesswork.
What "AC replacement" actually includes
A real replacement is more than the box on the pad. It usually means a matched outdoor condenser and indoor coil (sometimes the air handler), removing and disposing of the old equipment and refrigerant, new line-set connections, electrical, and a proper startup. A quote that covers only the outdoor unit isn't the whole job — and that's often why two "prices" look so different.
What drives the cost?
- Size (the cooling load). The right capacity comes from a Manual J load calculation, measured in tons of cooling — not a rule of thumb. A bigger, leakier home needs more system.
- Efficiency tier. A basic single-stage unit costs less up front than a two-stage or variable-speed system with a higher SEER2. The efficient one costs more to buy and less to run.
- Ductwork condition. Sound ducts keep the job simple; undersized or leaky ducts may need sealing or modification.
- Install complexity. Access, pad and line-set location, electrical, and any code updates.
- Switching to a heat pump. Since you're replacing the outdoor unit anyway, a heat pump adds efficient heating too — which changes the scope and the math.
How should I think about the range?
In plain terms: the low end is a builder-grade single-stage system dropped into a home with good ducts. The high end is a high-efficiency variable-speed system, often with duct improvements or a switch to a heat pump. Most homes land somewhere in between — which is exactly why an honest number takes a look at your house.
What's not included — and what about incentives?
The federal 25C tax credit expired December 31, 2025 and is not available for 2026 installs, so we don't budget around it. Local electric co-op or utility rebates vary by who serves your address — never a guaranteed amount — so confirm current offers with your provider, and we'll help you check. See our rural rebates navigator for how to find what's real. Financing is available.
Failure modes that cost you later
- Oversizing to "be safe" — it short-cycles, leaves the air humid, and wears out faster.
- Buying on sticker price alone while ignoring leaky ducts and running cost.
- Skipping the repair-vs-replace math — sometimes a fix buys you a planned replacement on your schedule. See repair vs. replace.
