Indoor air quality systems don't have one price, because the right spend depends on which problem you're solving — dust, germs, humidity, or stale air. Here's what drives the cost of each option, and where it makes sense to start.
What "an IAQ system" can actually mean
"Indoor air quality" is a category, not a single product. The common tools are media filter cabinets (better filtration, rated by MERV), UV lights, whole-home dehumidifiers, and fresh-air ventilators (HRV/ERV). Each solves a different problem, so the first question is what you're trying to fix — start with indoor air quality in country homes.
What drives the cost?
- Which device. A high-quality media filter cabinet is the most affordable upgrade; a UV light adds modestly; a whole-house dehumidifier is a larger piece of equipment; a fresh-air HRV/ERV is the most involved install.
- Integration. How it ties into your existing ductwork and system.
- Capacity. A dehumidifier or ventilator sized to the whole home costs more than one for a problem area.
- Electrical, condensate, and duct connections.
How should I think about it — and where to start?
In plain terms, there's a ladder. Better filtration plus regular maintenance is the cheapest move and the biggest bang for most homes. From there you add the targeted tool for your actual issue: UV for germs and coil cleanliness, a dehumidifier for a damp basement or humid summers, an HRV/ERV for a tight home that feels stale. The mistake is buying everything at once instead of solving the real IAQ problem.
What's not included — and what about incentives?
The federal 25C credit expired December 31, 2025 and isn't available for 2026. Rebates rarely apply to air-quality add-ons, but local co-op or utility programs vary by who serves your address — confirm with your provider; the rebates navigator explains how. Financing is available.
Failure modes to avoid
- Buying a gadget that doesn't address your real issue (a UV light won't fix humidity).
- A too-restrictive filter that chokes airflow and strains the blower.
- Treating symptoms while ignoring sources and ventilation.
